Detroit Photo History
Images of America, Detroit, Michigan is small snap shot of live in Detroit Michigan. It is not extensive in its coverage but represents typical scenes from the era from 1860 to 1899. It's 128 pages gives a feeling for some of the live style that was going on during this time period.

If you are looking for someone special, it is unlikely that you will find them in this book. You will find what the architecture looked like and how the people dressed. You will find examples of the modes of transportation and the types of commerce.

This book helps to fill in some of the culture of the period. Most of the time when you are looking for genealogy information you find nothing but dates, names and places. This book helps to fill in some of the history that was taking place at the time.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a general snap shot of the era.

A True Hoosier Hero
This is a must read for every Hoosier, Most physicans would also enjoy reading about this country doctor who did things the rest of us could only dream of doing. The book is warm hearted, entertaining, and well written. After reading the book, I felt as if I had sat by a fireplace sharing a very pleasant conversation with Doc Bowen. He is one of the few politicians I ever heard of who never was involved in any scandal, remained true to his principles, and remained loved by the folks of his constituency. As a fellow family doctor, I felt proud to have someone of my own profession rise to governor and later cabinet secretary on the administration of President Reagan.

Door County in Pictures
Images of America, Door County is an excellent book. Via pictures this book presents the history of Door County from the middle 1800's until about 1950. The pictures are from all of the cities of Door County.

Some of the pictures include the names of the people shown in the picture. All pictures include the story behind the picture. In some cases the story is lengthly and full of lots of anecdotes. For instance, Door County had a toll bridge from 1887 to 1931. The Leonhardt Music Hall was opened as an opera house in 1900.

The pictures are from many sources, mostly private people so there are pictures that would not normally be available. This adds a special flavor to the book.

If your ancestors came to Door County and you are wandering what their life was like, this is the book to find the answers. By way of the write up given with each picture you will be able to learn a great deal about the people and the place.

Ethnicity Challenged: The Upper Midwest Norwegian-American Experience in World War I#
Published in Hardcover by Norwegian Amer Historical Assn (April, 1981)
Author: Carl H Chrislock
Average review score:

Hard to fault with research this good!
Carl Chrislock shows he understands the Norwegian-American communities and their challenges leading up to, during and after World War I. The book exhaustively covers the diverse problems Norwegian-Americans faced during this era and with assimilating to American culture as well.

I purchased this book hoping to get better insight into the challenges my great-grandparents and other relatives faced at this time and came away with a much better understanding and appreciation for them.

The biggest complaint about the book is it does not progress in a logical chronological manner, which would seem to be a rather obvious approach. The book jumps backwords and forwards chronologically, making it a challenging read. The author would have done better to have kept the book organized chronologically as it would be easier to follow.

A great gift for a family new to the area!
I've lived in the Chicago area for 20 years, and there were a few things in here that I didn't know about, such as the American Girls Shop/ play in Chicago. But by and large, most of the Chicago area stuff I knew about. Where it really comes in handy is that many of the areas featured are within a few hours drive. Great if you're going to visit family and need something for the kids. We found all kinds of neat stuff about one of our favorite vacation spots in Door County, Wisconsin that we otherwise would have missed. One area that could stand to be improved - they have Chicago, then Northwestern Illinois (Galena etc). What about the 'burbs? There's a few little things here and there, but otherwise the whole Chicagoland area outside of the city limits is missed. I would also like to see more on restaurants. Chicago has a TON of restaurants, including the upscale but very cool Chicago Firehouse (actually built into a firehouse, complete with pole - saw Mayor Daley there!) and there are only 7 mentioned. All in all though, a good buy, and as I said, would make a great gift for a family with kids new to the area.

Fifty Hikes in Ohio: Walks, Hikes and Backpacking Trips Throughout the Buckeye State
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (August, 1990)
Author: Ralph Ramey
Average review score:

Excellant for those who enjoy exploring the outdoors
This a great book for hikers in Ohio. It describes in detail many hikes of varying length all over the state. However, sometimes the descriptions in the book don't seem to match the actual trail. A more detailed map and a compass are often helpful. All this is not to say that this is not a great guidebook. The hikes described are beautiful and exciting. I especially recommend Shawnee State Forest.

an excellent summary of Ohio's lakes
This is an excellent reference for any fisherman or outdoor enthusiast who lives in or visits Ohio. While most information is general, many useful facts are provided concerning camping, fishing, boating, and other things. It's very good for planning a weekend trip, or looking for new wilderness areas to explore.

Good Gift for New Yorkers
New Yorkers are notorious for not being able to give directions. We know how to get there, just don't ask us for directions! This book gives specific address and phone #'s,subway maps and of course street locations (ie: cross streets for 1535 Broadway? It's in here). It is easy to use:shopping, restaurants, museums, movie theaters, houses of worship, etc; are classified according to uptown, downtown or midtown locales with numbered site maps. The size of the guide fits in a jacket pocket, or the newer, trendy horizontal sized purses ladies now carry.I've purchased my copy for use at my job.I may just change my rating to 5 stars
